Task 2: Case studies of real life music magazines (Planning)

Case studies: Textual analysis and audience

VIBE headline in red on the very top of the magazine emphasis danger. This tells us as the audience what genre of music the magazine is R'N'B and rap.
The front cover image is a medium shot of Kendrick Lamar of him looking very God-like as he is dressed very well and he is wearing white which is seen as a sign of purity.
Skyline- mentions other artists which are similar to the artist on the front cover.
Colours are pretty straightforward black front stands out on white background and catches the reader's eye. Main colours are red, black and grey.
Barcode, pricing and issue number is in the bottom left hand corner.
Teasers - on the right hand side of the magazine features extra teasers to make the reader want to read more.
They are two stars on both '50 greatest albums' and the little words on the right hand side corner ' we dare you to disagree' shows that they have a link meaning between each other.
Image of the front cover is a medium shot of  the new up coming artist Kendrick Lamar
of him looking very ' God like' as he is dressed very well and is wearing white which is seen as purity.

Q magazine is the masthead which is shown in the top right hand corner; it is Britain’s biggest music magazine. Quote speeches from the main artist Chris martin himself about his ‘secret world’ is displayed across the front cover; also the main cover line (the second largest font) is ‘COLDPLAY’ in a white font. The image is a close up of just his face so he is at eye level with the camera; the cover line reflects the facial expression as his teeth are wide open which relates to the subheading ‘BARKING’.  At the bottom it features other artists that are in the same genre as Coldplay, colours used are very basic such as white, red, black and the colour white stands out and reflects the image. Bar code and pricing are placed in different areas in comparison to the Vibe magazine, the price of this magazine is £2.30 and the website link is just above the bar code for further information.

Ø 2 Content pages, spread across the page with loads of information and teasers.
Ø      There are two sections ‘ Features and Regulars’ in the features column they are  6 mini paragraphs giving examples of some artists that will be featured in the magazine and in the regulars column they are 10 mini paragraphs explaining the usual regulars that will be in the magazine such as quizzes, subscription, questions etc. I would say that the magazine is very well organised as everything fits well with the page and the images relate to the text.

Ø  They are 8 images on this contents page, the first one we notice as the audience is ‘Take that’ on the first page as it is largest image I think because it links to the text as it says ‘their first interview as a five piece in more than 15 years’ and it is shown by them sort of having a reunion with each other. Camera shot is a medium wide shot as it shows everyone’s body. On the second page they are a few smaller images which show artists and extras.

Ø  Main colours used are red for subheadings and headline as it presents the colour scheme really well, others include black bold font for the numbers next to the images/text, also white on a black background.

The Vibe letter is behind the image of the artist on the contents page to show the genre of magazine, it is also in a dark brown/red colour which stands out on the dark red background. The main image dominates the page, it is a mid-shot from the waist up the shot mainly focuses on the jewellery chains he is holding around his face. This shows a sense of power and the tattoos could be a symbol of respect. The features are displayed on the left hand side as they are directed to the reader’s eye, we as readers automatically read from left to right. Different font sides used for the Contents page and the text, the colour scheme is simple two colours of red and white.
